In Chapultepec Park, Rachel and Sam followed Papi as he zigzagged all over the place, following Chloe’s scent. It was here…and there…as well as all over two mangy dogs. Leaving Rachel and Sam behind, Papi went to investigate.

“You. That scent,” Papi said, walking right up to them and sniffing. “Where did you get that scent?”

The dogs were Milagros and Rafa, the pit bull and the terrier who’d escaped the fights with Delgado and Chloe.

Milagros was confused. “You mean the moldy taco?” he asked.

“No,” said Papi impatiently. “The perfume. It’s Chloe’s. She’s an American Chihuahua.” How could he describe her? “Her ears are as pink as seashells,” he added dreamily. “And her nose is like a raspberry?”

Milagros nodded. “Espera,” he said. “Is she kind of uppity, wears matching clothes?”

Papi perked up. “You know her! Where is she?”

“Last we saw her, she was with Delgado on the run,” Milagros said.

“Delgado? Who is this Delgado?” Papi asked jealously. “I want to hear more. Come with me.”

Sam and Rachel were sitting on a bench, exhausted, when Papi appeared with the two dogs. “Looks like we’ve picked up a couple of friends,” Sam commented.

Rachel rolled her eyes. “Great. That’s all I need. More strays.”

“Hey,” said Sam. “Papi was a stray. I saved him from the pound.” And even Rachel had to admit that Papi was a special dog—loyal, brave, and friendly.

Just then, Milagros sidled up to Rachel and put his blocky head on her knee, gazing at her with soft, trusting eyes. “Well, he is cute,” she said, shaking her head. A friend of Papi’s was a friend of hers. And Aunt Viv would have helped the stray dogs without a second thought. “But you have to give them a bath. They stink!”

Back at the hotel, Sam and Rachel got the dogs into the tub, laughing as they dodged wagging tails and flying suds. They’d never paid much attention to each other at Viv’s place, but now they were really getting along.

When the baths were done, the two of them got cleaned up and returned to find the three dogs sitting together in the hotel room, gazing out the window. “It’s a nice thing you did for them,” said Sam, looking over at Rafa and Milagros, who were cleaner than they’d ever been.

Rachel sighed. “I just hope somebody’s out there doing the same thing for Chloe.”

The train rumbled up the Mexican coastline. Along the way, it had stopped to pick up passengers, and now Chloe and Delgado were traveling with a crowd of Mexican dogs. Delgado was snoring in a corner while Chloe fielded questions from a curious puppy who had joined them.

“What’s America like?” he asked her, eyes wide.

“Well, I’ve been all over,” Chloe began, ready to tell the puppy about all the wonders of her life back home. But before she could begin, she was distracted by the moonlight shining on the Mexican landscape. It looked beautiful and strange. “But…” she continued, thinking of the way she used to view the world, “I don’t think I’ve ever really seen it.
